Meeting clients and discussing protection are the parts of my work people usually see. My day also involves continuing to learn, understanding clients’ concerns and explaining recommendations clearly.
People often ask why I chose insurance. Was it because the working hours are more flexible?
Flexibility is one aspect of the job. I also want to use that time to learn and communicate, putting what I know to practical use so individuals and families can better understand their protection.
Through this daily vlog, I wanted to share a little of my working life and how I see this profession.
Before Meeting Clients, Keep Learning
Working as an insurance adviser involves conversations with people, alongside learning that continues behind the scenes.
When a client asks a question, I want to understand it properly before responding clearly. If a detail needs checking, I should confirm it before offering an explanation.
For me, the value of learning shows in those conversations. Can the client follow the explanation? Do they have a clearer understanding of their concern? What still needs to be checked?
These questions remind me to keep improving and to explain what I learn in a way people can understand.
Start with What Matters to You
People speak to an insurance adviser for different reasons.
Some are thinking about their family’s future. Others are concerned about medical expenses. Some already have policies but have never fully understood what they cover.
At the start of a conversation, I want to hear your thoughts. What matters most to you right now? What would you like to resolve? Is there a part of your coverage that has always been unclear?
If you want to understand an existing policy, we can begin with the sections you have questions about. If you are exploring insurance for the first time, you can share your main concerns and the budget you are comfortable with.
You do not need to arrive with every question neatly prepared. Knowing what matters to you gives our conversation a useful starting point.
Explain the Recommendation Clearly, and Leave the Decision to You
In my video description, I shared a principle I follow: no hard selling, with advice as the starting point.
After a conversation, I hope you understand your needs more clearly and can see how a recommendation relates to them.
When listening to advice, you can ask:
- Which of my needs does this recommendation address?
- What conditions or limitations should I understand first?
- How would the premiums affect my everyday budget?
- If I already have coverage, what should we check before considering anything else?
These questions help bring uncertainties into the open. You should feel comfortable asking, rather than making a decision with questions still on your mind.
When an arrangement affects you and your family, take time to understand it before deciding on the next step. I want you to know why you are making that choice.
What Can You Prepare for Your First Consultation?
If you would like a consultation but are unsure where to begin, ask yourself: what would I most like to understand by the end of the conversation?
If you already have insurance, find your policy documents and mark anything you would like explained or confirmed. If you do not have a policy, start with your circumstances, the responsibilities that matter most to you and your budget.
You do not need to know every insurance term. Sharing your thoughts in your own words is often the easiest way to begin.
For example, you could say:
- “I already have insurance and would like to understand my existing coverage.”
- “Medical expenses are my main concern, but I’m not sure what to ask first.”
- “I’d like to understand what options would fit my budget.”
Or simply tell me, in your own way, what you would most like help with.
Taking Your Trust Seriously Keeps Me Going
In the video description, I mentioned that this profession feels a little like running my own business. It takes time to build, with challenges and a sense of achievement along the way.
When a client shares their concerns, I see that as trust that deserves a thoughtful response. Learning, explaining and exchanging ideas are all part of how I hope to do my work well.
Helping a person or family better understand their protection gives me a sense of fulfilment. I am grateful to the clients who have trusted me along the way and given me the motivation to keep learning.
